Peter, Paul and Mary

Marty Johnson, 18" x 24"

At first I thought this was a picture of three glum unknown coffee-house singers. I dubbed them "Peter, Paul and Mary" as a joke, but then realized that this was an intentional portrait of P, P & M circa the mid-1960's. I'm not sure why they look so gloomy -- on all their record covers and publicity photos they're always beaming (see below). Still, I think this is a lovely painting and I don't know why someone would get rid of it.

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't have any Peter, Paul and Mary in my vast record collection. I've been guilty of bypassing their LPs without a second thought when I come across them in thrift store record bins (which is often; they sold in the millions), but this painting has really whetted my appetite to listen to "Puff The Magic Dragon", "Leavin' On A Jet Plane", "If I Had A Hammer", "Blowin' In The Wind" and other folk classics again.
